The email security market continues to evolve due to the increase in number and complexity of cyberattacks, the ongoing shift to cloud email, and growing adoption of API-based email security solutions.

This evolution was the incentive for Gartner to remove in their latest Market Guide for Email Security the previous CESS (Cloud Email Security Supplements) and IESS (Integrated Email Security Solutions) categories, and introduce a new category ICES (Integrated Cloud Email Security).

The CESS category focused on specific hard-to-detect threats such as BEC and capabilities such as preventing accidental data loss, whereas the IESS category covered all threats, and provided many of the advanced detection capabilities found in the traditional SEGs (Secured Email Gateways) such as advanced malware protection, sandbox analysis and URL analysis, intercepting malicious emails before they reach a user’s inbox and more.

Gartner explains that this distinction is no longer needed as the supplement solutions have now grown to have a more complete set of functionality, and so the ICES category was introduced, which essentially combines CESS & IESS into one category.
